Research assignments are given to post-secondary students to demand inquiry, argument and evidence. Unfortunately the assigned research papers do not always meet the professor's expectations.  Is it because the students lack the intelligence, motivation or work ethic?

The University of Washington Information Literacy report of 28 college campuses (2010) suggests that professors do not adequately provide the written instructions that could facilitate the development of a high level product. Three quarters of students “considered written guidelines, especially which sources to use, as one of the most helpful materials an instructor can provide” (Head & Eisenberg, 2010).

Through the following four workshops, we will explore how we can analyze, revise and evaluate the impact of research assignments designed to enable students to achieve the assignments’ objectives and thereby produce exceptional student research papers.

(Note: These are a linked series of workshops. Registration and attendance is separate for each workshop.)

Informed use of bibliographic management tools like Refworks, Zotero and Mendeley can help to curb plagiarism. They can also be effective platforms for collaborative learning. This workshop will give an overview of several reference management programs, and how they can be incorporated into both student papers and faculty research.
