The task of grading students’ work can at the best of times be challenging on various levels. These include achieving consistency for all students, ensuring that students perceive that the evaluation has been conducted fairly, and above all, that the evaluation is another opportunity of learning for students. Participants will have opportunities to share the current issues of grading student work and solutions to ensuring that grading is more than assigning a value.

Many programs have practicum courses in the form of clinical courses, clerkships, experiential learning or service learning. The unique settings and learning activities in these courses can make it challenging to maintain academic standards while providing reasonable accommodation for students with disabilities. This workshop will provide educators with strategies for developing reasonable accommodations in practice settings. Participants will explore how to build a team approach for providing reasonable accommodation while maintaining academic standards in practice settings. This workshop is designed for administrators, faculty and mentors in practice courses. (practica, clerkships, clinical, experiential learning, service learning). Academic units are encouraged to send at least two members who will work together during the workshop.

This session aims to: 1) help participants better understand some of the specific challenges that university instructors face when undertaking teacher research in their own classroom settings and 2) outline various approaches that can be taken to ensure teacher research design are in keeping with the ethical standards of research practice outlined in the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans and the University of Manitoba’s Practitioner Research Guidelines. Emphasis will be placed on the dual relationships that exist when university instructors take on the role of researcher in addition to their already established roles and responsibilities as teachers, and the research potentially involves individuals of lesser power or status such as students or teaching assistants, as well as going public with the research results obtained from studying their practice.

This workshop incorporates critical pedagogy and student engagement theory to look at different strategies for engaging students after the mid-term break. Strategies include using a gallery walk (reviewing student group work in a way that builds upon the next topic); building connections to your discipline and profession through class activities and speakers; community mapping; using timelines to build a context for the topic you are teaching; case studies that are shaped by your students; “snowballing exercise” to showcase levels of increased student knowledge from the beginning of class to the end of the term. Drawing on the literature on student engagement and critical pedagogy, the facilitator will share 6 strategies for active classroom participation, and will work with workshop participants to develop & share their own effective strategies for beating the mid-term blues.

An article in The Chronicle of Higher Education notes that "to discover facts today, the required skill set contains much that is traditional but also much that is new."
How are you integrating the "new" into the research assignments that you set for your students?
Are you confident that they understand how to find, evaluate and use information in a Web 2.0 world?
We will examine new and emerging information environments and how you can use it to support student research and writing skills.
